New Years Resolutions to Exercise: Why Some Flourish While Others Falter
While starting an exercise routine is a popular New Years resolution, abandoning that resolution early on is almost as common. Toby Brooks, Ph.D., director of the Master of Athletic Training program at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Centers School of Health Professions, said the journey from resolution to reality is often paved with setbacks. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Awarded Residency Program Funding
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) recently announced the Graduate Medical Education (GME) Expansion Program award recipients for 2024-2025. The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (泫圖弝け) Amarillo campus was one of more than 30 residency training sites in the state to receive this critical funding. NIH Grant to Aid Rumbaughs Biofilm Dispersal Research
Most chronic wound infections share one thing in common: the presence of biofilms, which are composed of many different microorganisms that congregate as a mass, usually on some type of surface such as a wound bed. Biofilms are thought to be associated with up to 80% of infections, and their ability to stick together makes the biofilm and infection exceptionally difficult to kill. - February 21, 2024

Across the globe, more than 39 million people are living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS, including more than 1.3 million new HIV diagnoses last year. Rumbaugh Named Fellow by American Academy of Microbiology
Kendra Rumbaugh, Ph.D., a professor in the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (泫圖弝け) School of Medicines Department of Surgery, has focused her research career on investigating bacterial biofilms and their role in wound infections. National Academy of Inventors Names Liang a Senior Member
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 2.8 million Americans contract antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections each year, and approximately 35,000 of those infections lead to death. Prim Naegele had just switched seats with her teenage daughter during a road trip when she first felt pain in her chest and on the left side of her neck. It was the beginning of a 19-day odyssey that ultimately changed and saved her life. I thought, you know, that's kind of weird, but kind of blew it off as just anxiety with a new driver and thinking that was it, she recalled. When the 45-year-old experienced the pain again the next day, she went to a nearby clinic. All her bloodwork and a battery of tests, including an EKG, came back normal. I have no family history of heart disease, Naegele said. I'm not a smoker. My cholesterol is great. My blood pressure is great. There are more than 480 naturally occurring compounds present in the cannabis plant, more than 100 of which are considered to be cannabinoids. From House Calls to Virtual Visits
The use of telemedicine soared during the COVID-19 pandemic. Texas Tech Physicians primary and specialty clinics across West Texas have completed more than 160,000 telehealth visits since the start of the pandemic. To compare, after launching telemedicine initiatives in 1989, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (泫圖弝け) completed 50,000 telemedicine consultations between 1990 and April 2020. - March 10, 2023
Meta-Analysis Shows Association Between Autism in Children and Cardiometabolic Diseases
A study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from 2009 to 2017 determined that approximately 1 in 44 children ages 3-17 are diagnosed with some form of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Research also has established that children with ASD have an increased risk of obesity, and obesity has been linked to increased risks for cardiometabolic disorders such as diabetes and dyslipidemia (high level of cholesterol or fat in the blood). However, the question of whether or not there is an association between autism, cardiometabolic disorders and obesity remains largely unanswered. - March 16, 2023

Leishmaniasis is a tropical disease caused by parasites known as Leishmania, which are transmitted to humans and animals through the bites of more than 90 species of sand flies. Considered a neglected tropical disease, leishmaniasis is found in approximately 88 countries primarily located in South and Central America, the Middle East and western Asia. As many as 1 million new cases are diagnosed each year and more than 350 million people are at risk of infection. Some forms of the disease also have emerged in Mexico and Texas in recent years.

The Sobering Reality of Binge Drinking Among College Students
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) recently reported 18- 22 year-old college students have higher binge-drinking rates than their noncollege peers. With an estimated 1.9 million new cases and more than 600,000 deaths each year, cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the U.S., trailing only heart disease. And while there are more than 200 types of cancer, the abnormal synthesis of a protein known as STAT3 is unique to the majority of tumors. STAT3 is known as a transcriptional regulator, which means it regulates the expression of several genes. The Beat Goes On With a Healthy Heart
In addition to being a worldwide symbol for love, the heart is, in essence, a muscle that pumps blood to the rest of the body, delivering nutrients and, most importantly oxygen after it passes through the lungs. Pulmonary lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a rare form of cancer that affects up to eight of every one million women of reproductive age worldwide. As we try to beat summers heat by wearing shorts rather than pants and swapping sneakers for sandals, we also expose ourselves to more sunlight and increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Michelle Tarbox, M.D., an associate professor of dermatology for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (泫圖弝け) School of Medicine, said there are hundreds of minor types of skin cancer, which an experienced dermatologist can help detect. Federal funds have been made available to states under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021. The 87th Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 8 during the Third Special Session to allocate these funds. The Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC) will receive $113,082,887 to improve mental health care, expand services and increase the mental health workforce. Teaching an Old Drug New Tricks
To treat some of the psychosis issues associated with Parkinsons disease, physicians often prescribe pimavanserin, an antipsychotic drug that acts within the brain to prevent hallucinations and delusions. Because of its ability to prevent or reduce these symptoms, pimavanserin also has been studied as an antipsychotic treatment for other neurological conditions such as Alzheimers disease, schizophrenia and depression.

It is estimated that more than six million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimers disease, a number that is expected to more than double to 13 million by 2050. The disease annually takes more lives than breast and prostate cancer combined, and approximately one-third of seniors die with Alzheimers or a similar form of dementia. However, the path to developing Alzheimers disease often begins with an initial diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (CGI), which begins with subtle declines in memory and cognitive abilities. Of those diagnosed each year with CGI, approximately 10%-15% will eventually develop a form of dementia, including Alzheimers.

There were 465 candidates for graduation at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (泫圖弝け) School of Nursing commencement exercises Saturday, Dec. 17 at the United Supermarkets Arena. Among those graduates was the first cohort of the School of Nursing satellite campus in Mansfield, Texas. The satellite campus, which welcomed its first group of student nurses in 2021, is a result of a collaboration with Methodist Healthcare System, Methodist Mansfield Medical Center and the city of Mansfield to address the shortage of nurses in the region.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Hispanics are twice as likely to die from COVID-19 than non-Hispanic whites. Despite higher rates of infection and death from COVID-19, the CDC report showed minorities are getting vaccinated at disproportionately lower rates compared to non-Hispanic whites. In a CDC report of demographic characteristics of persons vaccinated during the first months of the COVID-19 Vaccination Program, U.S. Latinos received about 11.5% of the vaccinations, while Non-Hispanic white people received more than 60% of the vaccines. - April 07, 2021

As females age, their bodies typically undergo two significant changes that generally occur during adolescence and middle age. COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Available from Texas Tech Physicians
In accordance with recent recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Texas Tech Physicians in Amarillo will be providing a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to individuals with certain health characteristics who are current patients of Texas Tech Physicians in Amarillo. Since 1978 when the first test tube baby was born, in vitro fertilization (IVF) has become a reasonable option for couples that have trouble getting pregnant. Originally developed to help women with obstructed tubes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that as of 2018, assisted reproductive technologies, or ARTs such as IVF account for as many as four million births each year, or approximately 2% of the countrys annual birth rate. Vitamin Exposure Calls on the Rise in Texas
Vitamin exposure calls are on in the increase in Texas. Texas Poison Centers have seen a 55% increase in exposures to pediatric vitamins, a 35% increase in human exposure calls to vitamins overall and a more than 24% increase in exposure to melatonin calls from March through June of this year.

Abilene Scientist Receives Grant to Research Novel Brain Tumor Treatment
An estimated 700,000 people in the U.S. are living with a brain tumor and nearly 80,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Glioblastoma (GBM), an aggressive cancer most often found in the brain, is responsible for more than 75% of these tumors. Currently there are no effective treatments for GBM, which is almost always fatal, and most patients die 12-18 months after initial diagnosis.

The first COVID-19 vaccine shipment is expected to arrive in Amarillo on Tuesday (Dec. 15).
