The Opportunity
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ) is in search of its eighth Dean of the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine and Executive Vice President (EVP) for Clinical Affairs.
Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ is a comprehensive, health-related university comprised of six schools across six campuses that has served West Texas and beyond for more than 50 years. Starting as the School of Medicine in 1969, Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ is now one of the largest universities in the United States for depth and breadth of health care programs. Boasting more than 35,000 alumni and almost 5,000 faculty and staff, the institution graduates more health care professionals annually than any other institution in the state of Texas.
The Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine, headquartered at the Lubbock Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ campus, is a dynamic, innovative, nationally recognized school accomplishing its academic, research, and clinical missions across four campuses in Amarillo (medical education phases 2 & 3 and GME programs), Covenant Branch Campus-Lubbock (medical education phases 2 & 3), Lubbock Health Sciences Center (medical education phases 1, 2, & 3 and GME programs), and Permian Basin-Odessa/Midland (medical education phases 2 & 3 and GME programs). The Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine does not own an inpatient facility and relies on strong partnership affiliations with local teaching hospitals for undergraduate and graduate medical education teaching and community physicians to enhance the learner experience. Boasting a large, diverse faculty and staff, many Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine team members are recognized at the local, state, national, and international levels.
The Dean and EVP serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine reporting to the Provost and Chief Academic Officer of Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ, and oversees the clinical services for the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ reporting to the President of Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ. The Dean and EVP leads faculty and staff in strategic planning, securing resources, and implementing and evaluating activities related to the academic, research, service, and patient care operations. The Dean and EVP represents the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine and institution internally to our university community and externally to numerous stakeholders.
Qualities and Characteristics of the Right Candidate
- A terminal degree: M.D. with an exceptional academic and administrative leadership track record of integrity, service, achievement, and significance.

- Experience with Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation as an active participant, with knowledge and comprehension of the complexities of a medical school. The candidate will also have an appreciation for the important role of continuous quality improvement, and an understanding that the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine is currently in the process of preparing for the LCME site visit in March 2025.

The Role
The primary duties and responsibilities of the Dean and EVP include:
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement a strategic vision for the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine in alignment with the university’s mission and goals. Provide visionary leadership to faculty, staff, and students, fostering an environment of innovation, collaboration, and excellence.
- Academic Program Oversight and Management: Oversee the academic programs offered by the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine, including undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, and continuing medical education. Ensure innovative curriculum development and delivery are of the highest quality, incorporating evidence-based practices and addressing emerging trends in medical education.
- Accreditation and Compliance: Ensure the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine meets all accreditation requirements and maintains compliance with relevant regulatory bodies. Collaborate with external agencies, professional organizations, and accrediting bodies to uphold the highest standards of medical education and practice.
- Faculty Recruitment and Development: Recruit, retain, and mentor a diverse and accomplished faculty, fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. Promote faculty development and advancement through mentorship, professional development opportunities, and recognition of scholarly achievements.
- Research and Scholarship: Foster a vibrant research culture within the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine, working collaboratively with the Senior Vice President for Research supporting faculty and students in their pursuit of impactful research and scholarship. Encourage collaboration across disciplines and facilitate the translation of research findings into clinical practice.
- Community Engagement: Engage with local and global communities to promote the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine’s mission, values, and achievements. Foster relationships with health care providers, policymakers, and community organizations to address health needs and contribute to public health initiatives.
- Financial Management: Develop and manage the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine’s budget, ensuring effective resource allocation to support academic programs, faculty development, research initiatives, and infrastructure needs and ensure success of the clinical enterprise. Seek opportunities for revenue generation and cost optimization.
- Clinical Practice Oversight: Oversee and guide the Texas Tech Physicians group practice through strategic partnerships, faculty success, and outstanding clinical delivery of the highest quality. Ensure best practices and exceptional quality of the services provided to foster the growth of the multispecialty, interprofessional collaborative university practice through integrated care delivery provided by Texas Tech Health.
- Development and Institutional Advancement: Foster and cultivate strong relationships with external stakeholders, including health care organizations, industry partners, alumni, and philanthropic donors. Identify and pursue opportunities for collaborative initiatives, fundraising, and securing grants to enhance the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine’s resources and programs.

Texas Tech Physicians is the medical practice of the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine that operates primary- and specialty-care clinics across West Texas in the Amarillo, Lubbock, and Permian Basin communities.

Unlike traditional M.D. programs that separate basic science teaching from clinical

Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine Programs
The M.D. program prepares graduates to pursue any discipline or specialty through a redesigned curriculum first implemented in 2021. Phase 1 of the M.D. curriculum, which all students complete in Lubbock, includes seven foundational and systems-based blocks, in addition to doctoring and introduction to clinical medicine courses. For phases 2 and 3, students are distributed among campuses in Amarillo, the Permian Basin, and two Lubbock sites. The year-long phase 2 includes six 8-week clerkships in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Surgery. Phase 3 includes required selective and elective experiences typical of the fourth year of medical school.
Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ's unique FMAT program graduated its first class in 2013. Students in the FMAT program complete the M.D. degree in three years, rather than four, following a curriculum that includes an intensive 8-week summer course between the MS1 and MS2 years, a longitudinal family medicine clerkship in the MS2 year, and a capstone course at the end of the MS3 year—in addition to the usual phase 1 and phase 2 coursework. The FMAT program is linked to family medicine residency programs in Amarillo, Lubbock, and the Permian Basin. As of 2023, the program has graduated 90 family physicians. Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ is a founding member of the Consortium for Accelerated Medical Pathway Programs.
For students interested in interprofessional careers and leadership positions that extend beyond patient care, Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ offers a number of popular dual degree programs in partnership with other Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ schools and with Texas Tech University (TTU).

M.D./MBA (Health Organization Management) This joint degree program partners with the Rawls College of Business Administration at TTU to allow students to earn both M.D. and MBA degrees within the four years of medical school.

M.D./Ph.D. Students admitted to the M.D./Ph.D. program train for careers as physician scientists and biomedical researchers. Students in this program typically complete phase 1 of the M.D. curriculum, then spend four to five years completing coursework and research with faculty and students in the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

M.D./J.D. The M.D./J.D. dual degree program of study is administered by the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine and Texas Tech University School of Law. An exceptional opportunity for those who wish to master excellence in both fields, this six-year program prepares graduates for such areas as health law, health care policy, bioterrorism, forensics, or biomedical compliance.

M.D./MPH This visionary combined degree allows students to complete both the M.D. degree and the Master of Public Health degree through Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ’s Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health.

M.D. & E Students completing this joint program between Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ and the TTU Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering are prepared to develop careers that blend bioengineering, technology, and innovation to solve current and future problems in health care. Students receive both the M.D. and M.S. in Bioengineering degrees.

M.D./M.S. The M.D./M.S. program is designed for current Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ School of Medicine students in good academic standing interested in obtaining a biomedical research-oriented M.S. degree. Students receive a Research Assistantship during the M.S. program.

The Institute of Anatomical Sciences includes interdisciplinary lab and learning resource facilities aimed at supporting human anatomy instruction and clinical skill acquisition. It is the first Institute of Anatomical Sciences in Texas and has 7,000 square feet of state-of-the-science lab facilities. Learn more here.
Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ has interprofessional, multimodality simulation sites at Abilene, Amarillo, DFW Metroplex, Lubbock, and Permian Basin. These sites provide simulated, realistic health care environments for Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ students and residents in West Texas and beyond. Experiences within these sites facilitate the acquisition of competencies required to provide safe, culturally sensitive, quality patient care.
LARC operates and maintains the Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ animal facilities in Lubbock, Amarillo, and Abilene under the direct supervision of the Institutional Veterinarian. Through these operations the LARC provides for the procurement, housing, health, and welfare of research animals housed in Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ facilities. LARC provides technical assistance, advice, and education to faculty, research staff, and students in order to facilitate research goals while maintaining regulatory compliance.

The Values-Based Culture
Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ began our journey to create a sustainable values-based culture in May 2018. A very diverse group of 104 HSC team members collaborated to create a draft of the institution’s common core values that will drive our cultural renovation. Over 2,600 additional faculty, staff and student team members gave input and contributed to the final version of Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ’s Values-Based Culture Field Guide. The University’s goal is for everyone to hold themselves and others accountable to the behaviors that define our values-based culture. To that end, the Office of People and Values formed five collaborative and cross-functional Values Integration Teams to help integrate HSC values into daily work and processes. Each of the teams is focused on helping to create the environment that allows all individuals to live authentically in alignment with our values-based culture.
