What Is Interprofessional Education?

What is interprofessional education (IPE)? The World Health Organization describes IPE and its relationship to collaborative practice as the result of  when "students from two or more professions learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes. Interprofessional education is a necessary step in preparing a 'collaborative practice-ready' health workforce that is better prepared to respond to local health needs" (World Health Organization, 2010).

What Does IPE Look Like?

Interprofessional education is learning beyond disciplines. It is advancing health care through its integration of health care delivery systems that improve patient safety and well-being. Through team focused learning experiences, simulation of care-based scenarios, and collaboration for improved patient outcomes, students, faculty and preceptors, are working together and learning from one another.

Interprofessional Education at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
