For students of the Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health with a dedication to work in a rural area of Texas and who plan to do their APE in the semester of the scholarship award:
The goal for this scholarship is to recruit and retain the best quality students to the Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health and to build the public health workforce in rural communities or rural organizations in Texas. Scholarship recipients will conduct an Applied Practical Experience (practicum) with a site in rural Texas.
The scholarship amount is determined at the time of the award (minimum of $2500 for semester of the practicum experience). Scholarship funds are intended to defray costs of tuition and standard fees. The number of scholarships awarded each round is based on the funds available.
Requirements:
Application requirements include:
- GPA of 3.0 or higher and in good academic standing;
- Declaration of full-time enrollment status for the semesters of the award;
- Letter of support from employer, faculty, mentor, or advisor;
- APE proposal
In addition to conducting a practicum in a rural area or rural agency, scholarship recipients must also maintain satisfactory progress on their degree plans and remain in good academic standing.
Incomplete applications will not be reviewed by the committee.

Rural Health Scholarship Application

The Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health (JJMSPPH) Presidential Scholarship is an opportunity for dedicated public health students to engage in service-learning activities with organizations or agencies in their communities. "Service-learning" is a structured learning experience that combines community service with preparation and reflection, and results in benefits to the host organization as well as the student.

- Fall Application deadline is September 1. However, reviews of applications will begin on August 15th. Preliminary awarding will be done soon after.
Award Amounts:
- $5000 for a year ($2500/Fall and $2500/Spring)
- Spring award is contingent upon sufficient progress during the Fall semester.
Scholarship Requirements:
Presidential Scholars will identify, organize, and conduct a service-learning project that begins in the Fall and continues into the Spring semester.
Successful Scholars will:
- Be a SPPH student and enrolled in a Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ graduate program full time in Fall and Spring semesters (minimum of nine hours) of the academic year of the award.
- Maintain satisfactory progress on their degree plan and remain in good standing. If a student drops below a 3.0 GPA in one semester, he/she will lose their scholarship the next semester.
- Attend required monthly meetings with the Presidential Scholar Faculty Advisor (via Zoom) and fellow Scholars.
- Complete regular progress updates and reflections, including a progress checkpoint at the end of the Fall semester.
- Provide a final reflection paper, poster, and oral presentation at the end of the scholarship.

The Julia Jones Matthews School of Population and Public Health (JJMSPPH) is proud to partner with the Willie I, Wanda, and W.F. Martin Charitable Trust to provide scholarships for local students.
Eligibility:
- As per the specifications of the donor funds, funding priority is given to students residing in Abilene or Taylor County who are enrolled in the MPH Program at Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ. Address will verified by SOPHAS application.
- Second funding priority is given to students residing in counties contiguous to Taylor County, TX: Jones, Shackelford, Callahan, Coleman, Runnels, Nolan, or Fisher Counties.
- Continuing MPH students meeting criteria 1 or 2 above are eligible provided a) funds are available for the given term and b) they are not on academic probation. Incoming students are eligible provided they meet one of the two above criteria.
- In the event that there are more applicants meeting the criteria for #1 or #2 above than there are available funds, program may use additional information to award funds, including but not limited to: undergraduate GPA, MPH Program GPA, or a requested essay.
- Amounts vary based on available funds and student status as either full-time or part-time.
