 Biography:

Born and raised in Casper, Wyoming, Dr. Griswold attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana where he obtained a Bachelor of Science. He then attended Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska where he obtained his M.D. degree, and then on to Texas Tech for general surgery residency. This was followed by fellowships at the University of Washington in Seattle involving burn, trauma, and critical care. Dr. Griswold returned to Texas Tech in 1992 and developed a busy general surgery practice. He is currently Professor and Medical Director of the Timothy J. Harnar Burn Center. He was the Chair of the Department of Surgery 1997-2016 and Medical Director of the Level 1 Trauma Center (first to be verified in Texas by the state) 2000-2014. Dr. Griswold’s nomination as Chair Emeritus was approved by the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents at the February 2016 meeting. He also holds the position of Vice Chair of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement as well as Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Surgery. Besides being active in the care of injured and burn patients as well as critically ill surgical patients Dr. Griswold has an interest in patients with complex GI problems, malnutrition, and wounds.  In September of 2019, Dr. Griswold was named Executive Director of the Clinical Research Institute. The Institute supports and oversees all clinical research activities through out the Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Griswold has a very busy clinical practice. Although patient care has involved all aspects of general surgery, his entire career has been specifically oriented towards the care of the injured. He was recognized in January 2016 having the Level 1 Trauma Center named for him. His clinical volume is currently focused on care of acutely injured patients especially burn injured from insult to recovery including scar management and aesthetic and functional reconstruction techniques. Most recently this has led to a development of a very comprehensive laser program for scar prevention, removal and reconstruction.

Mirroring his clinical practice and focus on care of the injured, Dr. Griswold’s research has focused on assessment of the pathophysiology of injury and prevention of injuries. He has 93 peer reviewed articles and a multitude of competitive regional and national presentations focusing on the areas of pathophysiology and metabolic effects of injury, wound healing, infection and infection prevention, and the assessment of devices and products that improve healing and prevent scarring.

Dr. Griswold is focusing on curriculum development and the dissemination of practical and theoretic/scientific information to residents and medical students in all aspects of surgery. Much of Dr. Griswold’s current administrative and educational activities center around quality assessment as it pertains to surgery and surgical diseases as well as quality improvement and patient safety improvement protocols. He also is responsible for the Burn Center registry and quality data development, TQIP (Trauma Quality Improvement Program) and NSQIP (National Surgical Quality Improvement Program) for our institution.

Current areas of research include – nutrition in critical illness and injury, Sepsis both basic science and clinical impact, wound healing, health disparities definition and rectification, hidradenitis suppurativa.  All of my research is medical student driven, with a lead student and all projects contain 2 or 3 students as teams.
