A Vision for a Collaborative Approach

Beginning in fall 2016, leadership at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ) and Texas Tech University (TTU) began the process of assessing mental health related activities at each institution. These assessments culminated in a vision for a collaborative approach to mental health in which universities across the Texas Tech University System contribute their expertise to solve problems in the communities they serve and model solutions for the rest of the state and nation. The Texas Tech Mental Health Initiative (TTMHI) will facilitate opportunities for coordination and collaboration between the component institutions of the Texas Tech University System (TTUS) and the community. The TTMHI will coordinate mental health efforts to avoid duplication and encourage collaboration; serve as a repository of system wide knowledge on mental health; look for ways to apply research findings in clinical practice; and advocate integrating best practices into public policy.

The Texas Tech Mental Health Initiative (TTMHI) believes that optimal health outcomes require a whole-person view of health inclusive of promotion, prevention, treatment, and recovery. Based on this belief, TTMHI will leverage and coordinate the unique strengths of the Texas Tech University System’s component institutions and community partnerships to: (a) improve access to integrated services for people experiencing mental illness, substance misuse, and co-occurring conditions; (b) advance the knowledge and skills of individuals working with these populations; (c) enhance public understanding of mental health; and (d) develop and inform public policy. These collaborations will contribute to the TTMHI being recognized as a leading mental health institute that reduces the impact of mental illness, substance misuse, and related co-occurring conditions on our communities through collaborative activities in education, research, and service.
