Program AIMS
- Provide the highest quality of education to our residents, medical students, faculty, private physicians, other healthcare providers, and the community.
- Deliver the highest quality care and services for women throughout their life cycle.
- Health maintenance for women of all ages.
- Consultative care to women with infertility and endocrinologic disorders, complications of pregnancy, gynecologic problems, urinary incontinence and pelvic prolapse, genetic questions and disorders; and providing diagnostic ultrasound services as well as comprehensive care for women with gynecologic cancers.
- Conduct research regarding the health of women to advance knowledge and translate our findings into new programs for women.
Participating Institutions
Northwest Texas Healthcare System is committed to and supports graduate medical education. This hospital is a tertiary care facility which provides care for patients in the upper 27 counties of the Texas Panhandle, the Oklahoma Panhandle, western Oklahoma, eastern New Mexico, and southern Kansas. Northwest Texas Hospital serves as a high risk referral center for this vast region and provides helicopter transport and a state of the art neonatal intensive care service. The affiliation agreement between Texas Tech University and Northwest Texas Healthcare System provides a partnership in the development of high standards in medical care through education, service, and research. Northwest Texas Health Care System also serves as a sponsoring member of our Women's Health Research Institute. Graduate medical education funding and faculty support are provide through Northwest Texas.
Baptist St. Anthony's Healthcare System is a private non-profit institution that supports our private gynecologic surgery experience and gynecologic oncology service. Our family medicine program uses this hospital as its primary teaching facility, and our department serves that department in a consultant capacity.

Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ-Amarillo OBGYN has a unique, tight-knit group of residents and faculty. Our program is fully accredited and approved for 12 residents, or 3 per year. Due to its small size, our residency experience is highly personalized. Faculty encourages and supports each resident to pursue his/her special interests and career goals, in addition to the fundamentals of OBGYN. Ìð¹ÏÊÓƵ-Amarillo OBGYN is fully accredited by the ACGME.
Amarillo also has a very diverse patient population with unique and varied pathology. As the Texas Panhandle area is largely rural, our medical center is a hub for 5 surrounding states – Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Colorado.
Year 1 – 3 months clinic, 3 months labor and delivery, 3 months night float, 2 months gynecologic surgery, 1 month Family Medicine, 1 month Sonography
Year 2 – 2 months clinic, 3 months labor and delivery, 3 months night float, 4 months gynecologic surgery, 1 month sub-specialty (reproductive endocrinology and infertility,urogynecology), 1 month breast surgery
Year 3 – 2 months clinic, 1-2 months labor and delivery, 1-2 months night float, 4 months gynecologic surgery, 2 months maternal fetal medicine, 2 month gynecologic oncology
Year 4 – 1-2 months clinic, 1-2 month labor and delivery, 1-2 months night float, 2-3 months gynecologic surgery, 2 months maternal fetal medicine, 2 month gynecologic oncology, 1 month sub-specialty (optional)
Residents participate in daily (Monday – Thursday) didactics sessions for 30 minutes each morning. This time includes discussion of practice bulletins or articles, resident presentations, and health and wellness activities.
Our program also prioritizes preparation for the Oral Board Exam. Residents participate in Mock Oral Board Exams and keep Oral Board style case logs throughout the year.
Protected time is strictly enforced for the weekly educational conference, which occurs each Friday morning. This includes morbidity and mortality report and 3-4 hours of core didactic curriculum. Faculty lectures, guest speakers, journal club, and hands-on simulation make up the majority of Friday morning activities.
Many of our previous residents have gone on to join private practice groups. Our current residents have diverse interests and are in the process of pursuing careers in general private practice, academics, and fellowship.

Faculty is present 24 hours per day for hospital service and resident supervision. All residents serve on a night float rotation for approximately 2 months per academic year. The night float team is relieved on weekends by residents serving 12 or 24 hour shifts (interns are restricted from 24-hour shifts due to duty hour regulations). The night float system guarantees compliance with the ACGME –mandated 80 hour work week.
Call responsibilities include coverage of labor and delivery, emergency room calls, and coverage of all hospitalized patients (including sub-specialty patients).
