Guide to PDF Accessibility

Because the processes of remediation can be both technically complex and time consuming, it is always recommended that the uploading of PDFs to course shells and modules be avoided whenever it is possible to do so. As an alternative, it is recommended, that all content be created in the LMS itself, and that scholarly articles be located via the campus library's database portal.

PDF Best Practices

The following practices relating to PDF design and usage should always be avoided:

  • Avoid copying or scanning files as images and saving them as PDFs. The resulting file will not be accessible to a screen reader;
  • Avoid trying to edit PDFs in Acrobat. The time for accomplishing accessibility is earlier on in the design process; and finally,
  • Avoid copyright infringement when uploading PDFs to your LMS courses.
